Portrait of the Artist in the Work of Virginia Woolf
This paper examines the image of the artist which can be derived from the works of Virginia Woolf, taking into consideration various essays by Woolf as well as three of her novels: To the Lighthouse, Between the Acts and Orlando. These three novels feature artist characters – Lily Briscoe, Miss La Trobe, Isa and Orlando – representing diverse forms of creative expression. Through an analysis of traits common to these characters, an emphasis is put on different aspects of the portrayal of the artist figure.
