Influence of weak organic acids during precipitation on stabilization of silver nanoparticles

In recent years, silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have received great attention due to their unique optoelectronic and physicochemical properties [1]. In this study, wet chemical synthesis of AgNPs, using hydrazine as a reducing agent and poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) as a capping agent is given [2]. PAA-coated silver nanopowder, precipitated using different weak organic acids, was used for nano-ink formulation. Characterization of the reaction mixture, as well as the prepared conductive ink, was performed by various electrochemical techniques. PAA absorbed on the nanoparticle surface behaves as a weak acid which, depending on pH value of the medium, can be protonated or deprotonated. Efficiency of electrostatic stabilization of the prepared suspensions depends on the acid dissociation rate, and was tested in a wide range of Britton-Robinson buffer solutions. The anodic current responses and impedance measurement parameters were plotted versus pH to determine surface bound PAA quantity.
