A TOPIC-BASED APPROACH TO TEFL: FOOD ACROSS THE CURRICULUM

The thesis explores the topic- and content-based approach in TEFL (teaching English as a foreign language). The topic discussed throughout the thesis is food across the curriculum. The introductory section provides a theoretical explanation of content-based and topic-based teaching in elementary school. It explains what the main features of content-based and topic-based teaching are and how they can be applied in class. It also includes the Croatian National Educational Standard and levels that children of certain age must achieve during their education in elementary school. This is relevant for activities regarding food that will be further specified in the thesis. The central section comprises activities dealing with food. Activities are divided according to students’ age and knowledge they should achieve at a certain level. Beside age levels, each activity contains the activity name, a type (handout, quiz, project…), approximated time needed for completing the activity, interaction patterns (individual work, group work, pair work…), description of activity, language that students should use while doing the activity (asking questions, irregular verbs…), skills (listening to instructions, drawing, giving correct answers…), materials needed and preparation that is needed before the activity starts. At the end of every activity possible correlation with other subjects has been mentioned.
