Socio-cultural Aspects of Renewable Energy Production
Deploying renewable energy infrastructure not only affects landscapes, but also people and communities living close to its sites. Humans tend to establish a sense of belonging to the community of people with which they directly interact, but also to the landscape that represents that community. Changes of this local landscape or lifeworld through people or institutions from outside, such as RE projects, are therefore felt by them as an intrusion if this intervention is not adequately introduced in the local context. This sense of intrusion is often expressed with concerns about place disruption, landscape encroachment, or disesteem of local autonomy, which often lead to local opposition against such projects.
