Salivary antioxidant profile during temporomandibular disorders treatment
The imbalance in oxidative status is considered to be important pathophysiological mechanism in onset of various diseases. Product of that imbalance is known as oxidative stress. In this study, our aim was to determine whether stabilization splint, most frequently used therapeutically modality for TMD treatment, would influence antioxidant parameters in saliva. The rise in SOD levels, observed in our study, might indicate that splint therapy in TMD patients increases cleansing capacity from free radicals. The question remains whether TAC decreases in this process to avoid redundant reactions once the increase of SOD effectively compensates the OS.
