Wind, wave and sea current loads on offshore wind turbines
This study investigated coupling features of wind, wave and tidal current loads and their combined effects on the structural response of a bottom-fixed monopole supported offshore wind- turbine. A small-scale model of an offshore wind turbine was developed and systematic laboratory tests were carried out in the Wind-Wave-Current Tank (WWC) at Newcastle University, UK. In the experiments, the aerodynamic loads in six degrees of freedom of the wind-turbine model were measured. The measurement results have shown that the tidal current and waves have a significant contribution to the static loads on the wind- turbine model. The dominant frequency of the drag force acting on the wind-turbine model is the same as the wave frequency. This suggests the natural frequency of the wind turbine should be designed far away from the wave frequency to enhance its structural safety.
