Attitudes about Creativity a Survey of Students, Teachers and Parents
Creativity, one of the most desirable skills needed in all contexts of modern society, is usually defined as the act of taking something that is familiar and transforming it into something new, different, and unexpected. Given the importance of creativity in modern society, schools must create an environment that facilitates the creative development of their students and allows them to express their creative abilities. Although educational policies tend to value STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) disciplines over the arts, which enhance creativity, teachers have an important role in their students’ creative development. In this study, an anonymous survey was administered to a sample of teachers, parents, and students in order to compare and contrast their attitudes about creativity. The results suggest that creativity is not associated with good grades and that teachers prefer disciplined over creative students. Parents and teachers believe that the current education system hinders creativity development, but both groups also believe that creative teaching can motivate students to learn.
