A review of clean energy issues in the EU, and statistical analysis of some macro-level indicators
Greenification of electricity system is a social and economic challenge of immense proportions. The European Union proclaimed a goal of reaching about 60% of total electricity production from renewable sources until 2030, and almost complete decarbonization of power system (96-99%) until 2050. In this article we first explore, as an introduction, economic and political challenges the decarbonization process is faced to. We review the issue of cost competitiveness of renewable technologies against conventional ones, whereby one can note interchangeability between energy produced by renewable sources (RES), and tons of CO2 emitted into the atmosphere. Then we tangle the question of social costs of pollution. After that we present results of our statistical analysis of macro-level data, obtained from Eurostat, pertaining to various aspects of energy production and usage, to see how the results of EU greenification policies are reflected on macro- level.
