Satisfying careers in the eyes of Millennials – what can organizations do to make their careers more sustainable?
Sustainable careers are gaining momentum in the research arena and while the goal of sustainability is not yet commonly applied to Human Resources Management, this would imply that employers take the present and future well-being and performance of their employees into account (van Engen et al., 2014). This paper deals with career expectations and strategies of achieving sustainable careers of the youngest generation of employees - the Millennials. As organizations play an important role in building a sustainable career we were interested in finding out what can reward managers do to better serve the expectations of the youngest generation of employees. An empirical research was undertaken among 249 students in order to analyze their career expectations and preferences. Data analysis revealed that a satisfying career would most probably be characterized by ample promotion opportunities, interesting and challenging tasks, but most importantly, enough economic security and work- life balance. Reward managers are advised to create reward policies in the area of base pay, benefits, and job design more competitive as these were mostly favored reward elements by young Millennials.
