Environmental impact assessment of leachate from biowaste
Growing affluent lifestyles in many countries around the world in the past few decades have been accompanied by rapid increase in municipal solid waste production. The key environmental problem is the leachate generation which can be significant threat to surface water and groundwater. The leachate has very high concentrations of organic and inorganic pollution substances. This study investigated the physico- chemical and biological characterization of leachate from biowaste. The experiments were conducted in batch conditions with initial concentration of leachate 12206 mg O2 dm-3. Microscopic analysis indicated the development of biomass during the experiments. The efficiency of the biodegradation process was 88.9 %.
