Electrochemical and spectroscopic characterization of poly(acrylic acid) stabilized silver nanoparticles
Nowadays, silver nanoparticles have received great attention due to their unique optoelectronic and physicochemical properties resulting in their various technological applications [1]. This study reports the synthesis of aqueous dispersions of highly stable silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) with a mean diameter of approximately 2.5 nm. To prevent nanoparticle aggregation, poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) was added as a capping agent [2]. Characterization of the prepared PAA-stabilized silver nanograins suspension was performed by electrochemical and spectroscopic methods, using cyclic voltammetry (CV) and ultraviolet- visible (UV-Vis) measurements, respectively. PAA absorbed on the nanoparticle surface behaves as a week acid which, depending on pH value of the medium, can be protonated or deprotonated. Negative surface charge generates repulsion forces between naoparticles, thus, efficiency of electrostatic stabilization of the prepared suspension depends on the acid dissociation rate. Stability of prepared nano- ink was tested in a wide range of Britton- Robinson buffer solutions. The highest anodic current responses and maximum absorbance (λ = 415 nm) were plotted versus pH to determine surface bounded PAA constant dissociation. Prepared PAA-coated silver nanopowder was used as a base for formulation of stable conductive nano- ink suitable for printing with an ink-jet printer.
