Pensions

Lecture was done within ERA Summer course on European Social Security. Purpose of the lecture was to navigate participants through the EU social security acquis regarding pensions. First were provided some basics on pensions and their typology. Secondly, we went through the EU competences in this field. It is biggest in relation to coordination rules, as to prevent loss of pension entitlements due to free movement. Therefore, the third and the biggest part of the lecture was dedicated to coordination rules regarding three type of pension benefits: invalidity benefits, and old-age and survivors’ pensions. Finally, since supplementary pensions play important role in the future adequacy of pensions (by topping up public pensions), I have provided also a digest of EU directives relevant for supplementary pensions.
