Residents’ and tourists’ preferences for cultural and architectural heritage in a rural landscape – Case study of the Zlatna Greda, Croatia

The rural area of the Republic of Croatia is experiencing abandonment and the process is highly intensive in the eastern part of the country. The aim of this paper is to provide an insight into places of specific spatial and functional characteristics, pustara settlements, within the rural landscape of Baranja region to present them as the cultural and architectural heritage that need comprehensive protection and conversion. The redevelopment potential, as well as negative significance of abandonment of these sites, indicates the need for identifying characteristics of these settlements: values of built facilities and open spaces, movable cultural heritage as well as intangible values. The main objectives of this research were to determine the desirable tangible and intangible pustara values trough investigations of place attachment among former pustara residents and to provide information on the domestic tourists’ preferences towards visiting these settlements. The research results indicate a common preference among former pustara residents and tourists for the architectural heritage, e.g. the settlement as a spatial unit and parks. Additionally, preferences for recreational and entertainment facilities are expressed among tourists. Common interests as well as highly expressed needs among former inhabitants and tourists present basis for establishing new functions and redevelopment plans.
