Materials Characteristics Prediction: Case of Stainless Steels

One of the crucial points of mechanical design process is material selection. Several requirements have to be met during material selection, such as adequate strength of material, acceptable rigidity level, resistance to elevated temperatures, sufficient resistance to crack propagation, etc. Characterization of material is essential for design engineers to perform adequate material selection and it is usually done using experimental routines that can be complemented, if not substituted, with numerical prediction of material properties using modern numerical analysis routines backed with powerful computer processors. This paper presents a comparison of three different stainless steels (AISI 314, AISI 316Ti and AISI 321) used in a production of structures that are going to be exposed to severe operating conditions like in the marine environment. Steels are compared based on numerically determined properties and characteristics regarding fracture behavior.
