Bacterial adhesion on polyelectrolyte multilayers
In this chapter we considered the bacterial adhesion on material surfaces coated with polyelectrolyte multilayers. Generally, bacterial adhesion can be controlled by different material and bacterial surface properties, such as surface roughness, surface charge, hydrophobicity and specific surface structure. Regarding surfaces coated with polyelectrolyte multilayers we showed that the main factor for bacterial adhesion is the surface charge. Adjusting salt concentration as well as the appropriate terminating polyelectrolyte layer can lead to the formation of multilayer systems with optimized antibacterial properties.
