Thermal and calorimetric properties of mineral diesel and fatty acid butyl ester mixtures
Fatty acid butyl ester (FABE) was synthetized from butanol and waste sunflower oil using base catalyst and conversions above 96 % were obtained. Synthetized FABE was mixed afterwards with mineral diesel in volumes up to 40 vol. % of FABE. Thermal behaviour of the mixtures was examined by thermogravimetic analysis (TG) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The increase of temperature at 50 % mass loss and decrease in mass loss at 175 °C (maximum of diesel DTG curve) behaves linear (R2 > 0.99) with increase of FABE content in mixture indicating that TGA can be used for preliminary detection of FABE in diesel. DSC results show that all samples exhibit exothermal signals below -10 °C corresponding to crystallization of paraffins in diesel oil and partial crystallization of FABE. Maxima of exothermic crystallization peaks show small shift from - 14.3 °C (diesel) to -11.8 °C (40 vol. % FABE mixture).
