Cultivation of Bacterium Paracoccus pantotrophus in Aerobic and Anaerobic Conditions
Paracoccus pantotrophus (or Thiosphaera pantotropha) is a gram-negative chemolithotropic bacterium, which is capable to oxidize sulfur compounds. This bacterium can also use nitrite and nitrate as electron acceptors. During the growth on the organic substrate in aerobic conditions it is able to conduct the oxidation of ammonia to nitrite (heterotrophic nitrification) and simultaneous denitrification of nitrate to gaseous nitrogen. This makes bacterium Paracoccus pantotrophus a suitable microorganism for the removal of ammonia and other undesirable nitrogen compounds from wastewater. The growth of bacterium Paracoccus pantotrophus (GB 17) LMD 91.89 was examined in batch cultivation under different experimental conditions (aerobic, anaerobic, different pH and acetate concentration). Very good growth was observed with acetate concentration of 3.5 g L^ -1 in aerobic and anaerobic conditions.
