Fine-Tuning the Syllabus to Move Towards a Task-Based Approach in a Tertiary Level Business English Course

This paper deals with the fine-tuning of Business English courses within an English- taught business and economics programme which was carried out to better suit the needs of the students. The authors analysed the needs of BDiB students and conducted a survey among BDiB lecturers at core subjects to obtain a comprehensive image of the specific issues that need to be addressed in the fine-tuning of the syllabus. The authors will discuss the results of the survey and present the issues raised by it. Most of these were related to students’ poorly developed soft skills rather than their knowledge of business vocabulary. After taking into consideration the results of the survey, the authors developed new, task-based activities to better suit the needs of BDiB groups. The article will also provide the methodological background to these changes and give examples of some task-based activities useful on this level.
