Effects of zeolite clinoptilolite in-feed supplementation on indicators of energy metabolism in cows

Natural zeolites, commonly supplied in a form of clinoptilolite (CPL), are porous aluminosilicates, which crystalline structure enables cation exchange and adsorption of organic compounds, such as mycotoxins. The use of zeolite as a feed additive has been establish in animal nutrition to improve their performance, health and production. The objective of this study was to evaluate serum indicators of energy metabolism of cows supplemented with zeolite CPL. The study was conducted on twenty Holstein-Frisian dairy cows assigned into two groups, control (n=10) and CPL group (n=10). The CPL group received 100 g zeolite CPL (Vibrosorb, Viridsfarm, Podpićan, Croatia) in the ratio on daily basis started from the third month of pregnancy. Blood samples were taken on days -180, -90, -60, -30, -10, 0, 5, 12, 19, 26, 33, 40 and 60 relative to parturition. Serum glucose, lipid parameters (triglycerides, cholesterol and HDL-C), nonesterified fatty acids (NEFA) and β- hydroxybutirate (BHB) concentrations were assayed spectrometrically by commercial kits (Randox, UK). Glucose concentration was significantly higher (P<0.005) in CPL-fed cows on day 12 of lactation (3.6 mmol/L) compared to the control group (2.9 mmol/L). Triglyceride level was significantly higher (P<0.05) in the control cows on day 0 (0.16 mmol/L) than in CPL group (0.12 mmol/L), while cholesterol and HDL- C were not affected. Serum NEFA concentration was significantly lower (P<0.05) in CPL group on days 0, 5, 12 and 19 (0.8, 0.9, 0.8 and 0.6 mmol/L, respectively) than in the control cows (0.5, 0.4, 0.3 and 0.2 mmol/L, respectively). In addition, BHB concentration was significantly lower (P<0.05) in CPL group on day 19 of lactation (0.7 mmol/L) compared to the control group (1.9 mmol/L). Results demonstrated that cows supplemented with zeolite CPL had higher glucose level in early lactation and lower degree of lipid mobilisation following parturition indicating that zeolite CPL in-feed supplementation has beneficial effect on energy metabolism in dairy cows during the transition period.
