Unemployment trends in the countries of Eastern and Central Europe

The development and application of human knowledge, as well as the ability of man to master new production techniques and technologies is the origin of the entire economic and social progress. Hence it is understandable that the employment rate is taken as an significant indicator of the development of a country or territory, and the unemployment rate indicates economic instability. The aim of this paper is an empirical analysis of the unemployment in Croatia and some transition economies of Central and Eastern Europe. The process of transition is characterized by structural changes throughout the economy. The changing economic structure is reflected in the structure of the labour market and employment. Economic transformation into a market economy is accompanied by series of shocks and the most evident shock for the labour market is the shock of high unemployment. The high unemployment rate is the result of an overall decrease in labour demand. The mounting unemployment in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe caused more concrete measures to be taken in order to reduce unemployment, and especially to encourage the employment of the young, the long-term unemployed and unemployed women, and achieve greater efficacy of national labour markets. In this way it has been confirmed that the drive against unemployment remains their priority task. The economic structure of unemployment shows that in the Republic of Croatia it is mainly a question of cyclical unemployment, and it is expected to be reduced with the economic upswing.
