Effects of beta-glucan derived from cereals and microorganisms on skin health
β-Glucans, a natural cell wall polysaccharides, are found in cereals, yeast, fungi (including mushrooms) and some bacteria. They possess many health promotion effects on human health, such as anti-tumor, anti-infection, anti-diabetes, lowering blood cholestrol, and also immune- modulating properties. Also, β-glucan was found promising as an active ingredient in antiwrinkle activity, wound healing, antioxidant activity and moisturizing effect. But, exact β-glucan mechanism behind the function in anti-radiation, anti-wrinkle, anti- aging, moisturizing and healing minor wounds and burns remains unclear. To achieve complete benefits of this important functional ingredient, more extensive future research should be aimed at utilization of β-glucan for the development of new cosmetic products in further practical application.
