La projection au sol des espaces eleves du transept: le role des mosaiques de pavement medievales
Medieval floor mosaics exist in relationship with their architectural settings being subordinated to them. In some cases, the decorations imitate the projection of a dome or a vault, sometimes real carpets. Floor mosaics often indicate the localization of specific liturgical ceremonies and offices. Sometimes the disposal of such mosaics evocates monumental transepts, otherwise not elaborated in elevation or even not existing, by sumptuous decoration, as in Ganagobie or San Benedetto Polirone. The few preserved examples do not allow art historians to propose a list of images specially conceived for the floor of the transept. Probably the iconographic programs had the intention to explain the architectural unity of the space of the church.
