Ten Years After the Biggest Enlargement - The Prospects for Smarth Growth in Europe

Ten years after the biggest and historically most important enlargement of the EU seems to be the right moment to take stock of the European achievements so far and have a closer look into the European future. This period was marked by many challenges (economic crisis, enlargement) which need to be taken into consideration when contemplating on the prospects for the future of what is today the most advanced economic integration in the World. Actual problems include the stagnating position of the European economy globally and the shrinking role of its manufacturing sector with the potential problem of loosing the competitive edge in the future. According to the industrial and innovation performance indicators, the EU still lags behind its competitors, mostly due to an inefficient transfer of knowledge into new products and services. Pronounced differences among the EU member countries point out that simple and uniform solutions to innovation policy in the European context will be unable to deliver the desired effect of economic growth in a long run. The possible solution could be a complex approach to a comprehensive innovation policy known as the system innovation approach.
