THE INTEGRATION OF ENGINEERING KNOWLEDGE IN PROJECT-BASED TEACHING – PROJECT WORK: DEVELOPMENT OF ROBOT ARM

The development of engineering skills and knowledge is an extremely demanding process, especially if students have not previously developed technical opinion nor appropriate level of tacit knowledge. The main problem is the meaningful integration of the acquired theoretical knowledge, that it sometimes seems completely worthless. Project-based learning is therefore a key approach that can qualitatively improve and connect engineering knowledge. This paper represents a meaningful integration of engineering knowledge through the project-based design and development of a functional model of the robotic arm during a short engineering practicum. Project teaching was carried out by the model of PUD-BJ, as the teamwork of seven students who are due to comparisons achievements separated into two teams. When implementing the project, the students have shown exceptional engagement, but with the necessary and intense stimuli and directions by the hand of teachers, needed to successfully realization. The high integration of engineering knowledge, which is for students represent the most demanding and the most important challenges, was present in the stages of exploration and development ideas, developing mechanical engineering structures, programming microcontroller hardware, while students the highest level of individual engagement demonstrated during the presentation and demonstration their own product. Although this teaching requires an extraordinary commitment of the teacher-facilitator, and in the beginning can cause disorientation of students, extreme effects reported in the high integration of engineering knowledge, high level of acquired tacit knowledge and students' satisfaction with their own merits indicate the exceptional importance of project-based learning for further progress and successful development of the future engineers.
