On the use of strategies for teaching culture in pre-service EFL teaching
Abstract The study described in this paper examines the use of strategies for teaching culture in pre-service foreign language teaching. The aim of the study is to investigate the presence of cultural objectives in student teachers' lesson plans and to provide an account for the strategies for teaching culture as they were used in the lesson plans. The author analysed 74 lesson plans written by Croatian English as a foreign language (EFL) student teachers during their initial teaching practice. The findings show that cultural objectives are frequent in the lesson planning of pre- service teachers. A great variability may be noticed in the frequency of different techniques that student teachers plan to use to promote culture learning and in the frequency distribution of the activities that they plan to organise to achieve the cultural objectives of the lessons.
