The role of parental guidance in youth sport selection. A cross cultural analysis

In this study, the role of parental guidance was analysed to determine its influence on the decision making process to choose a sport. The guidance children receive may be overlooked and often-times unappreciated. In this cross-cultural study, students (n=1500) from Croatia, United States, Norway and Slovenia were surveyed to determine the reasons for their sport selection and parents' role in that selection. The survey questionnaire contained segments to determine the reasons to choose a sport, as well as the reasons to stop participation, including the role of parents. Basic descriptive statistics were calculated and the differences between groups were established using t-test and discriminate analysis. The results indicate a number of positive correlations between parental activity and the motives for selecting a sport, the type of sport selected, and the number of sports children choose to participate in. The study also established a number of differences between countries that may be explained by different cultures, tradition and/or sporting systems. This study and similar research can contribute to a broader understanding of the role of the parents? influence in the selection of a particular sport and their level of engagement in that selection.
