Radiocarbon dating of paper and parchment in the Zagreb Radiocarbon Laboratory
Radiocarbon (14C) dating of objects of cultural heritage and art is essential for valuation of original objects of arts and for differentiation between the original works and later reparation and restoration works. Due to a very low natural 14C concentration the radiocarbon dating method requires special techniques for chemical preparation of samples and measurement. The accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) measurement technique enables analysis of very small samples containing a few milligrams of carbon, and is therefore applicable to various objects of cultural heritage. Here we present results of 14C-AMS dating of several paper and parchment cultural heritage objects performed recently in the Zagreb Radiocarbon Laboratory: the Ahdname from Fojnica, manuscript Fojnica Armorial, a painting, and two manuscripts with liturgical texts in Latin. Details of sample preparation and interpretation of the obtained results is given. One has to keep in mind that radiocarbon dating gives the age of the material and not the time of the creation of an object, and that the creation of the object cannot precede the formation of the material.
