Using satellite imaging in cartographic visualisation of bark beetle damaged forest
After enormous amount of ice rain during 2014. huge damage was done in forest in Croatia, especially in the city Čabar area. Result of ice rain damaged forests is wide spread of bark beetle. To prevent further spread of bark beetles infected trees should be cut down. In huge forest area great problem is to detect areas with infected trees. Main characteristics of bark beetle damage is change of treetop color. Treetop color depends on the stage of infection and it goes from green to yellow and to red. Optimal period to detect infected trees in late spring or early summer because the surrounding healthy vegetation is green. Within Copernicus program European Space Agency is developing a new family of mission called Sentinels and are used for land, ocean and atmospheric monitoring. Using imagery obtained on Sentinel-2 mission cartographic visualization of bark beetle damage will be provided for year 2016 and 2017. Obtained results will be compared with official results provided by Hrvatske šume, public enterprise for forest and woodland management in the Republic of Croatia.
