Social relations across class boundaries: Using the position generator as an indicator of network diversity
This paper explores the relationship between class positions and personal networks. Previous research reports that people within class boundaries are more likely to socialize with one another. The theoretical interest of this research is the concept of homophily, which implies that people are more likely to interact with others from the same social group. However, limited attention has been given to social ties formed between people belonging to different class backgrounds. Using the position generator method, we operationalize class heterophily as occupational network diversity, or the number of occupations in which the respondent knows someone. In addition, we use hierarchical regression analysis to determine the effects of various sociodemographic and socioeconomic traits (income level, social mobility, size of settlement), value orientations and the cultural capital of respondents, on network diversity. The paper is based on empirical data from a survey carried out in Croatia in November and December 2017 , on a nationally representative sample of adults above the age of 18, as part of the project “Social stratification in Croatia: structural and subjective aspects”. The project’s starting point is Bourdieu’s theoretical apparatus.
