Research and development of plasma nitriding and PACVD treatments in the Republic of Croatia
Modern constructions, tools, medical, electronic and other equipment are exposed to highly demanding work conditions and strict regulations which present a continuous challenge for engineers and scientist to address in order to extend parts durability, increase their quality and upgrade their properties. Surface engineering solves the above-mentioned problems. This paper describes the adoption and development of surface engineering plasma techniques in the Republic of Croatia. This refers to plasma nitriding and complementary plasma assisted chemical vapor deposition (PACVD) treatments. Plasma nitriding is the most advanced surface modification treatment which results in an increase of surface’s wear resistance as well as in its resistance to surrounding conditions. PACVD is a coating technology which allows for deposition of thin, gradient, composite and nanostructured coatings, all of which may be applied at significantly lower temperatures than those of conventional chemical vapor deposition process (CVD). Both of these modern processes are low temperature and offer extraordinary and innovative solutions for specific new problems and applications.
