Interaction of aromatic hydrazones and selected lanthanides

Aroylhydrazones have been a subject of many investigations due to their versatile properties and applications. Many compounds of this type are biologically active as anticancer, antibacterial and antimicrobial agents. The chelating abilities of aroylhydrazones towards metal ions, particularly transition-metal and lanthanide ions, have made them attractive as analytical reagents for spectrophotometric and sensitive spectrofluorimetric determination of trace amounts of these cations. In this work we present the coordination abilities of aroylhydrazones derived from nicotinic acid hydrazide and differently substituted salycilaldehyde towards lanthanide ions. Complexation of the prepared compounds 1–4 with selected lanthanides (La3+, Eu3+, Gd3+, Yb3+) was studied in acetonitrile by spectrophotometric titrations as well as mass spectrometry. Whenever possible, the stoichiometry and stability constants of the corresponding complexes were determined.
