From Multilingualism to the National Standard: Linguistic Identities of Female Supporters of the National Revival in Croatia

The period between 1830 and 1850 was of utmost importance for the social and linguistic history of Croatia. The Croatian national revival under the name of Illyrian movement became, then, very intensive (Stančić 1985 and 2008), and culture was made into the main platform for the promotion of political ideas (Iveljić 2017: 336). In the multilingual society, in which German, Latin and Hungarian were the dominant and prestigious languages, the introduction of an organic idiom of Croatian ethnic communities as the new standard became an important factor of national identity. Having realized that women could make a valuable contribution to the national revival, the male leaders of the Illyrian movement invited them to promote the Illyrian ideology by acquiring and cherishing the new national standard as the most important element of the national life (Szabo 1995: 113). The purpose of this research is to reconstruct the language identities of some of the female background supporters of the Illyrian movement. By means of the linguistic and qualitative content analysis of their mostly unpublished private correspondence it is established how their language identity was changing under the influence of the new social and linguistic reality, and which internal forces played a role in shaping the change. The analysis shows which idioms they used in the private communication with family and friends, whether and how they reflected on language, and if they encouraged their children and family members to acquire and use the new national standard. The research results also provide new insights into the process of acquisition and spread of the Croatian standard, the role of women in this process, as well as an additional insight into the changes of the overall sociolinguistic picture of Croatia during the 19th century.
