RISK FACTORS IN DEVELOPING DEMENTIA AMONG ELDERLY

Many morphological and functional changes characteristic for elderly like chronical noninfectious diseases, including dementia, happen in the organism in the process of ageing. Etiology of dementia development still isn't researched enough thus all the possible risk factors that can bring to development of this disease have to be studied. Methods: We've used the key words „dementia“, „risk factors“, „elderly“ to go through the bases (Google Scholar, PubMed, Wiley and COBISS/OPAC). Results: We found and used fourty seven references in order to astablish which are the most significant risk factors that effect dementia. By using the data base references, we formed three basic risk factor groups: Psychosocial, genetic and vascular. Conclusions: Dementia is most common in elderly individuals, with advancing age being the strongest risk factor. Besides age factors that also influence the development of dementia are psychosocial (education level, social contact etc.), genetic and vascular (hypertension, high body temperature, diabetes, nutrition etc.).
