Sažetak
We focused on the possible antibiotic effects of BPC 157, administered alone or in combination with conventional antibiotics, using in vitro microdilution and disc-diffusion methods. BPC 157 (Diagen d.o.o., Ljubljana, Slovenia-99 % purity) was dissolved in saline solution and prepared in different concentrations (512 mg/L ; 51.2 mg/L ; 5.12 mg/L and 0.5 mg/L (disk diffusion test) ; 512 mg/L (microdilution method) using 120 bacterial strains isolated from clinical specimens: Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus faecalis, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Acinetobacter baumannii and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Ampicillin, erythromycin, gentamicin and vancomycin were used for the Gram positive strains, and amikacin, ceftazidime, ciprofloxacin and imipenem for the Gram negative strains. BPC 157 showed no particular antibiotic activity. However, the effect of imipenem in susceptible E. coli isolates appears as an interesting result, as it was increased in combination with BPC 157. The present study suggests that BPC 157 could be safely applied in combination with the antibiotics used, because antagonistic effects were not observed.
