Brassica oleracea var. acephala: a model plant for studing low temperature stress tolerance
Over 95% of the Earth’s surface experiences low temperatures below 5⁰C each year. Plants as sessile organisms, cope with low temperature stress by physiological, biochemical, metabolic and molecular changes within their tissues and organs. Chilling temperatures (1-10⁰C) lead to numerous physiological disturbances in the cells of chilling-sensitive plants and result in chilling injury and death. On another site, some plants are capable to cope with the chilling temperatures. In order to evaluate response in such a plants we studied Brassica oleracea var. acephala- plants which tolerates both high summer temperatures and low winter temperatures. In a laboratory conditions plants at different growing stage- seedling and 6, 7 and 8 week old plants were exposed to low temperature (8⁰C) and changes in physiological, molecular and biochemical responses were evaluated in comparison with the control (21⁰C). We believe that understanding of tolerance mechanisms in such a plants can improve breeding strategies and introduce cold resistance to the less tolerant crops.
