Hydrolytic degradation of nitrofurantoin
Today it is well established that the source, presence and the fate of pharmaceutical active compounds in the environment is of concern. This area of research has progressively received more attention as many pharmaceuticals in the environment becomes evident. Once released into the environment, they are transported and distributed into water, sediment, soil and biota. Besides their physical transport in the environment, they are subjected to several other processes that can lead to their elimination in the environment and consequently to a loss of their pharmacological activity. These processes refer to sorption, biodegradation as a biotic process, and non-biotic degradation such as photolysis, hydrolysis and oxidation. The class of compounds, known as the nitrofuran antibiotics are expected to be found in the aquatic environments based on their production and use. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate hydrolytic degradation of nitrofurantoin according to the procedure OECD 111. Hydrolysis experiments were performed at three different pH-values, 4.0, 7.0 and 9.0 at three temperatures, 20 °C, 40 °C and 60 °C. In order to determine degradation rate of nitrofurantoin samples were analyzed by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS) which was performed with an Agilent 6410 triple-quadrupole mass spectrometer coupled with an Agilent Series 1200 HPLC system.
