Application of water deficit stress at wheat heading stage
Due to the worldwide climate changes, drought became common abiotic stress factor endangering plant growth and development thereby affecting wheat quality and yield. In this study three winter wheat genotypes (Katarina, Antonija, Žitarka) were tested for drought tolerance during the heading stage by exposing the plants to drought conditions for 10 days, compared to well watered conditions. Antonija exhibited the highest guaiacol peroxidase (POD), ascorbate peroxidase (APX) activity and proline content under water deficit among tested genotypes. Diversity in activity of antioxidative enzymes implies on different genetic background of tested genotypes in dealing with the dehydration stress. Remarkable proline accumulation under water stress provide the evidence of its involvement in the osmoregulation process.
