Karst springs their definition and classification
Karst spring represent special kind of different water outflows from the underground to the surface which occurs in karst terrains. It is a natural exit for the groundwater to the surface of lithosphere through the hydrological active fissures of the karst mass. They appear most frequently in the places of contact between the carbonate masses and the impermeable layers (e.g. flysch). Karst morphology and water pathways within the karst massif feeding the karst springs, which change with altitude and outflow capacity. Due to very special and complex underground and surface karst forms there are very different cases of karst springs. In literature there are many classifications, systematisations and/or definitions of karst springs from different points of view in accordance with different scientific disciplines (hydrology, geography, hydrogeology, geomorphology, geochemistry etc.). No one of them is so many-sided that would be able to clearly explain their complex functioning.
