In vitro assessment of antagonistic potential of Trichoderma spp. against Fusarium graminearum and Fusarium verticillioides

Fusarium graminearum and Fusarium verticillioides are phytopathogenic fungi that pose major health concerns due to their mycotoxins production in contaminated cereals. Biological control by microorganisms is new natural alternative to chemically synthesized fungicides. Ability of six Trichoderma spp. isolates (antagonist) to suppress radial growth of one isolate of F. verticillioides and three isolates of F. graminearum (pathogens) was examined in vitro. Each isolate of potential antagonist was combined with each pathogen in dual culture and bioassay was carried in triplicates. Percentage of radial growth inhibition of phytopathogenic fungi by Trichoderma spp. was calculated using measurements on the day when contact between two colonies occurred in comparison with control plate containing pathogen only. On average, Trichoderma reesei, Trichoderma asperellum, Trichoderma harzianum and Trichoderma koningii inhibited pathogen growth 89.7±14.7%, 71.6±13.4%, 70.1±16.5% and 69.5±15%, respectively, and showed better biological control effect than Trichoderma viride isolates. All tested Fusarium spp. were inhibited by Trichoderma spp. isolates with average inhibition of radial mycelial growth ranging from 62.8±11.3% to 68.0±14.8%.
