Evaluation of structural integrity of a ship hull used as port oil storage, Part II: 3D FEM analysis
Evaluation of grounded aged ship hull serving as oil port storage has been performed by the Finite Element Method (FEM). The single hull oil tanker has been built in 1956 (named ISOMERIA at delivery) and after its regular service finally converted to port storage, partially supported by the mud and surrounding sea water, respectively. Based on the available technical drawings and thickness measurement reports, the 3D FEM model has been generated and loaded by the ship cargo and ballast weight. It is also properly supported by the pressure which is calculated according to the physically consistent ship static equilibrium mathematical model that takes into account supporting mud reaction and buoyancy of surrounding water. Structural analysis has been performed, and von Mises stresses in representative finite elements are calculated, and further compared with allowable limit values. Finally, conclusions on ship suitability to serve as port oil storage are drawn.
