Paradigm of the Armenian Genocide and Armenian - Croatian contacts

In his study Paradigm of the Armenian Genocide and Armenian and Croatian contacts, Lupis elaborates the problem of the role of small nations in world politics, Croats and Armenians. The Eastern Question – the legacy of European and world politics of that time, including the solving of the Croatian question, as well as the Armenian and Assyrian questions in the East – is still as actual in many aspects. The crime against the Armenians, i.e., one of the greatest genocides in human history – which is, in all its elements, the first holocaust against a nation and religion, committed by the top military and political echelons of Constantinople, followed by a media hush-up and ignored by the international community, which had armed the Turkish army to the teeth and trained it to commit the act – has its own paradigmatic significance. The Croatian people in many ways experienced a similar history, that is, since the 15th century they were exposed to the same process of destruction of the national territory, slavery, oppression and islamization and deprivation of cultural memory as well as the Armenians by the same Ottoman Turks. Therefore, it is interesting to observe the phenomenon of printed media in the Croatian lands remaining silent at the time of the Armenian Genocide. The Austro-Hungarian monarchy as an ally country of the Ottoman Empire supported the Ottoman rule, while at the same time was aware of the difficult situation of Christians, because it was the patron country of the Roman Catholics. State censorship of the press in Austria-Hungary was so strong during the war years 1914–1918, that the local press noted no news of the apocalyptic situation in Asia Minor. In the early 19th century Dubrovnik preserved many links with the Levant, together with numerous family ties of its emigrants. Dubrovnik newspapers «Prava Crvena Hrvatska», followed political events in the Ottoman Empire in 1915 on weekly basis, but as a newspaper of the allied country it glorifies the Turkish military might and power, without any news on numerous Armenian victims, because the genocide had already started during the month of April. The same year in August the Right Red Croatia glorifies Turkish soldiers: But we know also, that the Turk is an excellent soldier, who rightly deserves our admiration. He fights with the will to win because he knows that the defeat would destroy the survival of his empire, and consequently its own existence.
