This paper shows how the events of the First World War influenced the sudden stop of the booming tourism industry on the Croatian coastland. Inthelate19th andearly 20th century, tourism, as a new social phenomenon, was becoming an increasingly important measure of a country’s social and economic progress. Improved transport infrastructure, a favourable climate, attractive landscapes, and the development of specific branches of medicine all contributed towards unprecedented investments in the development of tourism on the Croatian coast. This capital set into motion construction projects: technical infrastructure, roads, ports, hotels, sanatoriums, bathing resorts, restaurants, casinos, and other facilities necessary for providing tourism- related services. Investments in tourism demanded attractive locations, for which land and labourers had to be secured. The narrow strip of land along the coast soon became a huge construction yard. Due to the demand for space, and with the goal of providing rest and recreation, the construction of extravagant hotel buildings required specialised knowledge since such buildings were in demand among Austria-Hungary’s wealthy elite. In ordertosatisfy the demands of the tourists, new buildings were opened up towards the sun and their spatial arrangement, furnishing, and shaping followed high standards while remaining in accordance with their environment. The out break of the First World War put an end to practically all investment in tourism. Therefore, this paper present sand analyses unrealised hotel projects and explores the possibilities of what the Croatian coastland could have looked like had they been completed. This work presents the unrealised hotels on the Brijuni and Rab islands, in Lovran, Opatija, Zadar, Trogir, Split, Trsteno, Dubrovnik, etc. This paper is based on research in the Provincial Archive in Graz ; the State Archives in Rijeka, Zadar, and Dubrovnik ; the Conservation Department in Za- dar ; and on studying the contemporary Austrian architecture journals.
