Is Pornography a Risk for Adolescent Academic Achievement? Findings from Two Longitudinal Studies of Male Adolescents
A recently published longitudinal study reported a negative association between SEM use and academic achievement among Belgian male adolescents aged 12-15 years (Beyens, Vandenbosch, & Eggermont, 2015). Attempting to validate the robustness of the findings, the present study used two independent longitudinal samples of Croatian adolescents. Exploring the target association by path and, to control for the nested character of the panel samples, repeated measurement multilevel analysis (RMMLM), we consistently failed to find a significant link between SEM use and the reported academic achievement. Time spent using online social networking sites, rather than SEM use, predicted decrease in academic achievement over a period of one year. This study points to the importance of replication and cross-cultural validation when studying socioculturally sensitive and morally laden phenomena, such as adolescent SEM use.
