Excavation of natural and crushed stone – environmental constraints

As urbanisation proceeds, all around the world, and in Croatia as well, there is an increasing social pressure on the mining industry to improve operating practice, to protect the environment during exploitation of mineral resources and to rehabilitate old mines' sites after the exploitation. Requests on mining activity are much stronger in regions of dense habitability in Croatia, like in surroundings of big cities (Zagreb, Split), protected and tourist areas (Zagreb mountains, Dalmatia and Istria). In such cases on mining activity there may even be pressure to reclaim sites and terminate mines. Special attention must be paid to environment of building stone mines, particularly in touristic regions where most Croatian deposits are located. Complex mathematical modelling investigations are used for changing from open pit to underground exploitation of building stone. This changing is carried out due to economical, but mainly environmental reasons. Due to the same reasons, fracture toughness testings on different types of rock are conducted. The aim of these testings is to define the effect of fracture toughness on the mechanism of rock breaking upon mechanical excavation of crushed stone with hydraulic hammer. The acquired results of the fracture toughness testings can be used as an index for the classification of rock materials regarding resistance of fracture expansion.
