The Biodegradation Potential of Leachate from Biowaste – Focus on Microbiology

Biodegradable waste is a potential hazard to the environment and human health because of its specific properties and continuous flow from a variety of sources, causing emissions to water, air and soil. During the biowaste disposal, the leachate containing dispersed, desorbed and dissolved substances occurs. It is characterized by high content of organic matter, toxicity, strong odour and orange to dark brown colour. The aim of this study was to investigate the biodegradation potential of leachate from biowaste and to isolate and identify microbial cultures which dominated through biodegradation process. Leachate biodegradation experiment was conducted in batch conditions. During the experiment pH value, chemical oxygen demand, biochemical oxygen demand and colony forming units were monitored. In order to monitor changes in biomass development, microscopic analysis was performed. Microbial cultures were isolated and identified based on morphological and biochemical tests along with MALDI-TOF analysis. Biodegradation efficiency of biowaste leachate of 88.9 % was obtained in the 8th day of experiment. Raoultella ornithinolytica and Klebsiella pneumoniae predominated through whole biodegradation process.
