Correlation of mechanical load and delamination during drilling in fibre reinforced composites
Composite materials due to their favourable strength-to-weight and stiffness-to-weight ratios are increasingly used in high-performance applications. During machining, parts of composite materials are easily damaged, reduce achievement of better technoeconomic effects. Characteristic damage during drilling process of fibre reinforced composites is delamination. Delamination during drilling occurs both on the exit and the entrance of the hole. In this paper Ho-Cheng`s and Dharan`s analysis has been given, showing the optimal thrust force (defined as a minimum force above which delamination occurs) as function of drilled hole depth. Also, a comparison of this model with the data during drilling of composites reinforced with carbon fibres has been analysed.
