PETAR GUBERINA’S LINGUISTICS OF HUMAN SPEECH

The year 2016 was marked by the centenary of the publication of the Course in General Linguistics (Cours de linguistique générale) by Ferdinand de Saussure (1857-1913), the key event for the development of linguistics as a scientific discipline and for the development of structuralism in twentieth-century linguistics and social sciences. The Course remains a milestone for the discussion on the issues of language use, language system, and speaking in general. Saussure points to the twofold nature of Human Speech, which includes the Language (system) (synchronic and diachronic)1 and its use. He emphasizes that every natural language primarily exists in oral form.2 The variety of manifestations in Human Speech would be difficult to grasp without the principle of classification – an arbitrary and self-contained linguistic system that ensures the coherence of language as a system that continues to exist independently of its concrete use. Guberina parts from the theoretical legacy of Saussure that is concisely portrayed in the Course. The Course also announces the development of a linguistics of language (system) and a linguistics of speech, speaking, or language in use3 as two separate disciplines. Guberina was one of the first twentieth-century linguists who grounded his entire work in the domain of the linguistics of human speech or language in use, and thus led the way to a vast array of topics that would be dealt with in twenty-first century research on language, opening up areas of research that cross the boundaries of the language system. The originality of Guberina’s theories went beyond the framework of twentieth-century structuralism and announced post-structuralist research of language, enunciation, and discourse. Diversity in the study of language has reached the point that, in the francophone context, one often refers to contemporary linguistics in the plural: les linguistiques contemporaines. If we observe the study of linguistics as a comprehensive and dynamic set of disciplines, at the level of expression as well as at the level of content, as implied by Bally, and clearly shown by Guberina, we see that all of these fields derive from the common unity ensured by the affectivity of human beings. Affectivity stirs human beings to express themselves by structuring and continually regenerating comprehensive and dynamic sets of expression. The real structure of human thought is constantly shaped by affectivity. Affectivity is not a mere addition but an essential element that determines the quality of the overall utterance.
