Space imagery in the novel Muki by Tihomir Horvat
Based on the theoretical assumptions of contemporary theorists, the role of the space/town in building the identity of the literary hero Ivan Plemeniti Zajc in the biographical children’s novel Muki written by Tihomir Horvat could be read. Growing up in the environment of traditional middle class family of strong male authority, the space of the town has also a strong mark on the hero’s musical identity, while interiors and exteriors of Rijeka co-create his artistic hypersensitive personality. The novel is extremely emphasizing compositional parallelism ; on the one hand we follow personal destiny of the hero, while on the other we witness the time (socio –historical) context of Rijeka figuring as a background plan as well as a strong base in building and reconstruction of the cultural identity of the hero himself. It is the interweaving of individual and general that models the story line and natural and cultural urban topos takes over the function of narrative retardation and cultural polyphony from which Muki takes sound as a mean of expression, turning it into an intimate space of personal satisfaction.
