Sensitivity of mumps virus to the action of IFN-α subtypes

Human type I interferons (IFNs), predominantly IFN-α and IFN-β, are known to play an important role in early host antiviral response. The IFN- α family consists of even 12 subtypes which despite their high structural homology and signaling through the same receptor have different antiviral, antiproliferative and immunomodulatory activities. Differences in the production of IFN-α subtypes therefore determine the quality of an antiviral response. The aim of this study was to examine the pattern of IFN-α subtypes induced in mumps virus (MuV) infection and then to assess the sensitivity of MuV to the action of IFN-α subtypes. Our results show that all IFN-α subtypes are expressed in response to MuV infection and that pattern of their expression is similar regardless of the virus strain used. Our data demonstrate that all tested IFN-α subtypes can suppress MuV replication, however the intensity and pattern of their action are dependent on a virus strain.
