Experimental tests on the rotor axle of turbocharger
The turbocharger presents a complex tribological system in which extreme working conditions (high temperatures and speeds) should meet the projected lifetime. In this paper, experimental tests have been performed out on a timely turbocharger in order to find out the causes that caused its defective operation. Conditions recordings and results of test samples of the turbocharger show that during high speed driving at longer times the system extremely overheats. Release of lubrication but also cooling after the engine shutdown is one of the reasons for the local overheating of the turbocharger rotor. In time, the rotating parts, in particular the turbocharger rotor shaft, are affected. As one of the solutions, the use of a sensor would be imposed, which would not allow the shutdown of the drive until the turbocharger temperature was lowered to acceptable value.
